Book bands are a structured system used in schools to categorise reading books by difficulty level so that children have access to reading material that is matched to their ability as they gain progressive fluency.

• Colour-coded system: Each level has a designated book band colour, making it easy to identify the difficulty level at a glance.
• Progression through colours: Book Band colours start at Lilac, level 0 (wordless books) in Reception through to Black+ at level 16 for super-confident readers in Year 6.
• Reading schemes may be categorised by book band colours or phases (for phonics) and publishers use a standardised approach to designate the colours based on the Institute of Education’s publication Book Bands for Guided Reading (Bickler et al).
• Supports Reading for Pleasure: ‘Real books’ — the kind of books found in bookshops, can also be levelled by experienced reading experts, so that primary school children, can enjoy reading a wide range of brilliant books independently.
• Standardised approach: Book bands allow teachers to choose books from various publishers while ensuring a consistent level of difficulty for students.
• Monitoring Progress: Book bands help teachers monitor students' reading levels and recommend suitable books that are matched to their ability, supporting continued progress in reading.

Once children have completed their phonics learning, book bands can provide a stairway of progression through reading books and given a great selection of appropriate and varied books at each level, children will be able to make choices based on their interests which supports reading for pleasure.
